Irene Vilà received the B.E. degree in Telecommunication Systems Engineering (2015), the M.S. degree in Telecommunication Engineering (2017) and the PhD degree in Signal Theory and Communications (2022), all from UPC. In 2025, she joined the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicació(ETSETB) in 2025 as Lecturer.
Her studies were supported by competitive grants, including a grant from Everis (NTT Data) during her M.S and a public FI AGAUR grant by the Government of Catalunya for her Ph.D. She later received the postdoctoral “Margarita Salas”
grant for training young doctors by the Ministry of Universities of the Spanish Government, which she carried out between the CONNECT center in Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and GRCM of TSC in UPC. In recognition of her PhD
thesis, she was awarded with the special doctoral award in the field of ICT by the Doctoral school at UPC.
Her research interests lie in mobile communications, with emphasis on radio resource management, network optimization, and Radio Access Network (RAN) slicing. She also works on edge computing and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to RAN management, focusing on AI trustworthiness, standard compliance (3GPP and O-RAN), and virtualization techniques to enable deployment. As a result of her research activity, she has participated in multiple competitive projects, 5 of them at European level and 6 at national level, and in 4 projects
related to contracts with private companies. In addition, she has made 9 publications in peer-review journals, 1 contribution to a book chapter and 22 contributions to national and international congresses. Two of the articles
presented at the congresses have been awarded, one as “Best Paper Runner-up Award” and the other as “Accessit Award”. She has also held sessions to disseminate the knowledge gained from her research activity in PhD programs,
and presented two half-day tutorials, one at 2023 EuCNC & 6G Summit and the other at WPMC 2024. In addition, she has participated as General Co-Chair in the 2nd Workshop On Distributed And Intelligent Edge Computing For 6G
Communications of IEEE CAMAD 2023 and as Publication Co-Chair of ICMLCN 2025. She is also involved in standardisation activities, actively contributing to the European Telecommunication Standardization Institute Multi-
Access Edge Computing (ETSI MEC).
She has been teaching different subjects in bachelor’s and master’s courses offered by Escola Tècnica Superior de Telecommunications de Barcelona (ETSETB) at UPC. These include “Radiocommunications”, “Artificial Intelligence
for 5G” and “Introduction to Audiovisual Processing”. She has also supervised and co-supervised three final Bachelor’s and Master’s degree theses and she is co-supervising a PhD student.
