Oriol Sallent received the Engineering and PhD degrees in Telecommunications from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1994 and 1997 respectively. He joined the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicació de Barcelona (ETSETB) in 1994 as an Assistant Professor (spa: Profesor Asociado), became Associate Professor (spa: Profesor Titular) in 1998 and Professor (spa: Catedrático) in 2011.
He regularly serves as a consultant for a number of private companies. He has participated in a wide range of european projects (ATDMA, CODIT,RAINBOW, WINEGLASS, CAUTION++, ARROWS, EVEREST, E2R, AROMA, NEWCOM, E2RII, NEWCOM++ and E3 among others) with diverse responsibilities as WPLeader and Coordinator partner. He is currently participating in ONEFIT, as leader of the Workpackage in charge of defining algorithmic solutions, and FARAMIR projects within the 7th Framework Program of the European Commission. Besides, he is currently the Coordinator of project HELP, which pursues the creation and exploitation of synergies between public safety networks and commercial cellular networks through network sharing and spectrum sharing principles.
He was General co-Chair of the IEEE 14th Personal Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications Conference (PIMRC) and Technical Program co-Chair of the IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC), held in Barcelona in September 2004 and May 2009 respectively. VTC and PIMRC attracted 740 and 680 participants respectively, from over 50 different nationalities.
He received the Doctorate Award from the Telecommunication Engineer Association of Spain in 1997 for his Ph.D. dissertation on multiple access protocols for CDMA-based systems. He also received the Special Doctorate Award granted by UPC.
He has contributed to standardisation bodies such as 3GPP, IEEE and ETSI.
He holds 3 national and 1 international patents.
He is co-author of 5 complete books and chapter-contributor to another 5 books. His book "Radio Resource Management Strategies in UMTS" (John Wiley & Sons, 2005) was translated to chinese in 2009.
He has lectured Tutorial Sessions in international conferences (such as MWCN, PIMRC, EW and IST), Specialised Courses to national and international companies and Master Courses to post-graduates since 1998.
His research interests are in the field of radio resource and spectrum management for heterogeneous cognitive wireless networks, where he has published 150+ papers in IEEE journals and conferences.
