In any wireless system there is clearly a very scarce resource, which is the available bandwidth. 3G mobile Communications Systems intend to provide several classes of services at different bit rates while assuring a Quality of Service (QoS) for each one. The only way to harmonise these two contradictory points (scarce bandwidth and a stringent QoS) is with a proper management of the available radio resources.
The starting point of this project is that of mobile wireless heterogeneous networks (including UMTS, GERAN and WLAN) with the aim to provide end to end QoS for IP-based multimedia services in an efficient way. In this framework, the purpose of this project is to cope with the different problems at different levels leading to gain insight into an ultimate global solution. The project TelMAX conducts research on a new concept of cellular communication system, adapted to the mobile environment, to provide broadband IP connectivity services, with management of the quality of service, while ensuring uninterrupted support in ongoing communications for the implementation of professional services for voice, video and data.
